Coyote: A Trickster Tale From The American Southwest

I read this book to a group of 1st and 2nd graders. After reading the book, I asked the students what kinds of animals live here in the Southwest and what kind of changes they may have gone through before looking the way they do now. Each child took a turn naming an animal and how that animal might have changed. I then asked them to think of one particular animal and go to their table and draw a picture of that animal. Some of the students drew a picture of the animal the way it looked before, some drew how it looks now, and some drew a before and after picture. The following are some of the responses and illustrations that I received.

It changed because it grew up.

The drawing shows two saguaros and a lizard.

The drawing shows a tarantula.

Maybe tarantulas didn't have legs.

Maybe the snake didn't have a rattle.
The drawing shows a rattleless rattlesnake and four prickly pear cacti.
The drawing shows rattlesnakes and a saguaro.

A snake can rattle.
