Coyote Places the Stars

Book Review:

This is a story based on a Wasco Indian legend explaining the origin of the constellations. Taylor weaves the mystical feeling of a legend into a simple and easily understood story for children. The story portrays the majestic animals of the desert in a fun and friendly way. The author's use of a wax-resistant batik method to create the beautiful and vibrant illustrations greatly enhances the story.

Coyote climbs to the moon to discover the secrets of the heavens, and while he is there he arranges the stars into the shapes of his animal friends that live with him in the canyon. When he climbs down the ladder, back to the canyon where he lives, he lets out a proud and attention getting Oweowowooooah! All the animals of the canyon hear his call and run to find out what is happening. When they are all together, Coyote tells of how he has arranged the stars to create beautiful pictures of them all. They all look up and see Coyote's magical drawings in the heavens and celebrate the joyous occasion with a party.
