How the Stars Fell into the Sky
Book Review:
How the Stars Fell into the Sky is a Navajo Legend about how
the First Women decided that there needed to be laws. The laws needed
to be in a place everyone could see, the best place was in the sky written
with the stars. As she placed the stars neatly in the sky one-by-one
a coyote watched her. The coyote went to the First Women asking if he
could help; she agreed to let him help her. As they picked each star
from a blanket and placed them in the sky one-by-one the coyote became
impatient. When the First Women turned to place a star, the coyote gathered
two of the corners of the blanket and before he could be stopped, he
flung the remaining stars out into the night sky. The stars spilled
into the sky and the First Women's careful patterns of her laws were
shattered. The First Women wept at what coyote had done for there was
no undoing the tumbling of the stars.
