Process
1. Introductory Set
Ask the students questions to get them motivated in the lesson:
o Who likes food?
o Tell the person next to you what type of food is your favorite.
o Tell the class. (Limit number of answers. If Timmy says turkey; ask how many of you like turkey too? Can you give me another food that you like?)
o Ask what the origin of a certain type of food is. (Example: tacos are a type of Mexican food)
o Have you every brought some type of food to class? Maybe for your birthday? Like cupcakes, brownies, or other types of food?
o What made you choose to bring that?
Tell students that today they are going to hear a story about diversity.
o Diversity is a way of saying that we are all different, because we come from different families, cultures, backgrounds.
After the story we are going to make a picture of our favorite type of food and you are going to tell us why you chose it. So think about that as I read the story.

Finally when we are all finished with our activity, I have a special surprise for you.

2. Objective/purpose
Students will:
1. Students will listen to a story and participate in a discussion
2. Follow directions for completing the activity
3. Give clear dictation for what the picture shows and why they chose it
4. Publish their work

3. Input
Note:
Collect the permission forms so that I can publish their work on the Internet.

Step 1: Before we start reading the book
* What is the first thing you notice about the front cover of the book?
* Do you think the book is going to be about food? What told you that?
Step2: Start Reading (after 1st page of text)
* So were you right, is the book about food?
Step 3: Continue Reading (stop on the 9th page of text)
* Review what they have made so far: pan dulce (Mexican sweet bread), empanadas de calabaza (pumpkin turnovers), chango (monkey man) bars, bagels, challah (braided bread), and the jalapeño bagels.
* What would you bring?

Step 4: Continue Reading till the end
* Where you surprised that Pablo decided on the jalapeño bagels? Why or why not?
* Note: Have students talk with their neighbor before raising their hands to answer the questions.

4. Modeling
Step 1: Show my picture of kugel and give a short description of what it is before I give directions for the activity.
Step 2: Give directions for activity
* Think about what the type of food you eat in your family that maybe important to you.
* When you get to your table, I would like you to draw, as best you can, that type of food on your paper.
* When you are done please come to either myself or your teacher and we will take dictation for you on what the food is and why you chose it and maybe what is it made with.
* If you finish early you may read on the carpet or practice you letters

5. Check for understanding
Leave example up so they can refer back
* Ask students: What are you going to do first?
* Second?
* Third?

6. Guided Practice
At the start walk around to see the students art work, until it is time to do dictation for them.

7. Independent Practice - or Homework
None

8. Closure
Review a little bit about the book and why I chose it.
Go back over the objectives for the lesson:
* What did they learn?
o Everyone is different. We all have different likes and dislikes, we come from different families, backgrounds, cultures.
* What were the directions that we followed? Give me the first one.
Make a bride to further the lesson:
* On Tuesday or Wednesday you are going to follow a recipe in class, doesn't that sound fun?

Snack time: "jalapeño bagels" (sugar cookies with red and green sprinkles shaped like little bagels - 2 per student).

Assessment
Students will read their description to a partner.

Extensions/Modifications
For the following class, have students follow a recipe. Perhaps find another book that has (a) recipe(s), example Thundercake by Patricia Polacco.
