Songs of Shiprock Fair

The reviewer of this book had the opportunity to read this book to Mrs. Peralta's 3rd-grade class. Instantly, the students made personal connections to the book. Overwhelmed with excitement, the students had the opportunity to retell their experiences. In their own personal literature responses, they shared about fairs they had attended. The majority of the children's responses to the book consisted of drawings and short summaries.

The students were able to compare and contrast food, music, exhibits, games, rides, and the diverse crowds of people who attended the Pima County Fair with those who attend the Shiprock Fair. Mrs. Peralta's 3rd-grade class was very impressed by the traditional Navajo clothing that was illustrated in the book. Songs of Shiprock Fair would be a great book to introduce a lesson or unit that would focus on Navajo culture. Mrs. Peralta's 3rd-grade class hopes to see you at the next Shiprock Fair.
