How the Sun Was Born/Como el sol nació

In the classroom/library:

Como el Sol Nació /How the sun was born is most appropriate for K-3 students.

Drama Lesson Plan 30-45 minutes

Introduction 5-10 minutes

Explain who the authors of the book are, and who the Huichol Indians are. Read Como el Sol Nació /How the sun was born.

Warm-up activity 5-10 minutes

Divide children into three groups: volcanoes, dinosaurs, and suns. Children make the movements of their corresponding groups. Children switch groups until all have done each movement.

Drama Activity 10-15 minutes

Children divide into two or three groups, with each group containing some volcanoes, dinosaurs and a sun. Working cooperatively, children reenact the story, making appropriate movements and sounds. Each group shares their drama with the others.

With students who are unfamiliar with drama or improvisation, you may want to read the story as they physically act it out.

Closing 1 minute

Taking dinosaur steps, children form a circle and then the dinosaurs fall asleep.
