Welcome to the Sea of Sand

The students I was teaching were young, so we did a group activity. While reading, we wrote down every animal that we read about. We did this because animals are part of their curriculum. The students, who were from New Jersey and did not know much about the Southwest before reading this book, loved learning about the animals of the desert. Then we went around the room and answered the question, "If you were to explore the desert, what would you bring with you?" I wrote out all of their responses, and photocopied a color copy of their responses to put into their folders.
