Big Moon Tortilla

Book Review:

What a book! Big Moon Tortilla is based on a little girl named Marta and her grandmother, who makes the best tortillas in the whole world. Marta has to face a number of problems that everyone deals with at one time or another, and her grandmother's wise words ease her sorrow, and brighten her thoughts.

The mood is set by the vibrant earth tone colors used by Dyanne Strongbow, as she reenacted Joy Cowley's time and the Tohono O'odham Reservation. The story comes alive with the movements that the drawings depict. Overall, I found the story to be a great lesson for the students that may be stressed, or for the basic moral, "Your problems are not always as bad as they seem, just take a step back and enjoy the rest of the world around you."
