Dzání Yázhí Naazbaa': Little Woman Warrior Who Came Home
A Story of the Navajo Long Walk

The students listened to the book and compared the main character to heroes they studied earlier in the year. They wrote a paragraph about a hero that was meaningful to them. They drew a picture of a symbol that represents their hero.

Suhailah'a drawing shows an American flag.

Hi My name is Suhailah. I am going to tell you about Martin Luther King. Jr. Martin Luther King Jr. is a peaceful and honest man. He freed African-Americans and made civil rights so that white and black people can be together. Today everyone celebrates Martin Luther King's birthday. Everyone appreciates him for who he is.

Gricelda's drawing is a map of the United states and a ship.

Gricelda
Christopher Columbus found America. He found America by sailing in boats. His boats were Santamaria, Pinta and Nina. He was born in Spain. I am writing about Christopher Columbus because he found the United States of America.

Briana'a drawing is of Rosa Park's name written in a heart with angel's wings.

Briana
Rosa Parks was a very brave woman. I think she's my hero because once she got out of work she got on the bus and she was in the front of the bus and they didn't allow that because she was black. The police told her she had to move from her seat and she refused to move because she was tired from work. Also Rosa Parks was born in 1913. She gave advice to the confused ones and she took out the bravery and courage out of them and I think that even though she died a few months ago people will still carry her in their hearts.

C's drawing is of a bicycle and a helmet

My name is C and I'm writing about Lance Armstrong. He is a hero because he overcame his cancer and won 7 Tour de France's. He is an inspiration for younger kids. Lance is brave and strong.

Ana
Rosa Parks was a woman that came from work late at night. She rode the bus home and another person came on the bus that was white and told her to move and stand. Rosa Parks said "no" and got into a lot of trouble. I think not standing up was the best decision!
