She'll Be Comin' 'Round the Mountain

Book Review:

This story directly correlates to the familiar children's song, "She'll Be Coming Around the Mountain." It incorporates various Southwestern animals that anticipate the arrival of a mysterious character. Each page builds the excitement of what will happen "She" comes. The entire town bustles as they plan a fiesta full of Southwestern food and dancing. The skunks prepare tacos, the armadillo and gecko make guacamole, and the coyotes prepare enchiladas and ensaladas.

The book contains many literary devices, such as alliteration, imagery, and rhyme that enhance the plot. For example, the animals prepare the guest room and "plump the pillows puffy." Philomen Sturges' use of the literacy devices allows reader to either sing or read the story. Having students participate in the read-aloud provides them with an oral language experience and produces active readers.

Ashley Wolff creates vivid and exuberant illustrations. The images cover two-page spreads with detailed desert landscapes. Wolff uses rustic colors to enhance the Southwestern setting. The illustrations are textured in a way to portray a lifelike quality. The text and illustrations complement each other to create the perfect Southwestern experience.
