How the Sun Was Born/Como el sol nació
Book Review:
How the Sun was Born/Como el sol nació is a bilingual book,
written in English/Spanish, and authored cooperatively by 3rd grade
students with the facilitation of their art teacher. The plot was influenced
by the class study of ancient Mexican life and early Aztec ideas that
the sun had both human and animal characteristics. This book is the
children's own myth about the creation of the sun. A mother dinosaur
lays eggs but volcanoes erupt and change life on earth. However, from
this destruction is born the sun, that rises and sets in a regular way.
The illustrations were created by the same students, and they are inspired
by the colorful yarn art of the indigenous Huichol people of Mexico.
The book was a "Kids Are Authors" winner in 1992, out of over
560 entries.
