Abuelita's Heart

Book Review:

Using vibrant pictures and Spanish words followed by their English translations, Amy Córdova tells a wonderful story about a girl coming to know her heritage and excitement for her future. The young narrator visits the Southwest, where her abuelita, her grandmother, lives. Through meals, walks through the land, and family stories the girl is given the gift of love and knowledge of her heritage. "The earth is enchanted here." The story is mystical and heart-warming.

The Cave of the Heart is where the young girl finally makes a connection with land, her ancestors, and present family. The reader is also able to gain an appreciation for our world, and those who have shared its offerings. "It is by reaching out to one another that we...create something beautiful to last through the ages." The voices of the past must never be forgotten, but carried with us for strength into the future. If you follow your heart, your path will lead to great things.

Set in the American Southwest, the illustrator does a phenomenal job of capturing the magic of the land. The artist used acrylic paints, oil pastels, colored pencils, and a big eraser on Stonehenge paper to create the beautiful illustrations. This story can be appreciated by all. Recommended for ages 4-8, children can reflect on their own time spent with relatives as well as appreciate and share their unique heritage.
