Correctamundo! Prickly Pete's Guide to Desert Facts & Cactifracts

Correctamundo! Prickly Pete's Guide to Desert Facts and Cactifracts was read to an 8th-grade math connections class. The students were excited to have a book read to them versus continuing on with their regular math. To their surprise,I incorporated math in this lesson - but in a fun way. The students were interested in knowing whether the statement was a fact or a cactifract because the book includes many animals that they see every day.

At the beginning of the story, I gave each student 11 sticky notes. After I read each page that had a statement, the students got up and we made a T-graph showing whether they thought it was a fact or not. After I'd read the whole book, we chose one of the fact/cactifracts and made a graph showing the people who thought it was right versus the people who thought it was wrong. When making the graphs, the students had to label all of the parts.
