Listen to the Desert/Oye al desierto

Book Review:

Listen to the Desert / Oye al desierto is a bilingual children's poetry book of some of the sounds which one may hear in the desert in the Southwest. The onomatopoeia elements of the poetry, include the sounds of the hoot of an owl, hop of a toad, hiss of a snake, coo of a dove, call of the coyote, a fish eating, the rain dancing and the wind spinning. The words that represent the sounds in Spanish and English may differ, yet they mean the same.

Thsee colorful, full-page Southwestern illustrations include animals, cactus and saguaros. At the bottom of each page, the illustrations include a border which continues throughout the book.

This was Ms. Mora's first book published by Clarion Books.
