Cactus Hotel
Cactus Hotel is most appropriate for students in third to fifth
grade.
Lesson Plan:
Goals: to use literature for background information; to gain
an understanding of the purpose and life of a cactus in the Sonoran
Desert
Objectives: Students will acquire a basic understanding of the
life of a saguaro cactus. Students will learn how the desert animals
utilize a cactus. Students will gain an understanding of the cycles
of the life of a saguaro cactus.
Core Curriculum: Science: Foundations Level 1) Students will
learn of the cycles of a saguaro cacti. 2) Students will learn of what
it takes for a saguaro cactus to survive in the desert. 3) Students
will learn the importance of the cacti to the desert animals.
Art: Foundations Level: 1) Students will draw a desert scene.
2) The students will draw and color their favorite part of the story,
while including desert animals and the desert itself.
Sequence: 1) Talk to students about saguaro cacti and important
information they should know about the cacti. 2) Read Cactus Hotel by
Brenda Z. Guiberson, showing the beautiful illustrations by Megan Lloyd.
3) Discuss the cycles of the saguaro cactus. 4) Discuss the importance
of the saguaro cactus. 5) Have the students draw a desert scene using
bright colors, including animals and cacti.
